euthanasia

i had just finished my six mile loop in the rain & as i was walking along the dirt road back to the house i saw something wriggling along the ground.

i thought it was some kind of weird lizard, but when i got closer i realized it was a squirrel - a squirrel who’s back half had been completely flattened by a car. and it was dragging itself along the ground with its two front legs, bleeding to death slowly.

it took me about two or three minutes to work up the courage.

then i stepped on its head
three times
it’s little skull gave way beneath my running shoe and i gave out a little yelp.

and then i picked it up with a stick and threw it into the woods

and walked down the dirt road
and the rain stopped
