I rarely sit through a whole movie anymore
I’m watching 80s horror films as research for an upcoming waverly project. So so so boring.
I think as our attention spans continue to decrease while our ability to process simultaneous streams of complex information increases, everything except the most excellent, well-crafted films will become intolerably dull. This would put movies more at the level of opera or painting - the best will survive and the rest forgotten.
The inevitable Internet-TV hybrid and video games will become the mainstay of “entertainment” where genre will survive, while feature films will evolve into a more unique and rarefied medium separated further and further from literature, less linear, less narrative but more eternal. In other words: ART.
But then again I guess there’s a lot of people out there who still get a really big kick out of watching a flaming car flip over in slow motion and explode on a huge screen.
