The journey to the East that some of our parents made in the 1970’s by, ironically, going West to California, applied ancient Eastern teachings to Western values of individuality, philosophical materialism, and free market capitalism.

But it seems to me that the technologies of non-attachment, mindfulness, equanimity, once divorced from their sacred roots, were too often mutated into mere tricks and quick-fixes, promising the student the benefits of a spiritually rich life without the inconvenient hassle of devotion, discipline, or sacrifice. Which, by the way, is basically how drugs work.
