The Great Wall, pt 5 - TOWN
I’ve spent all this time trying to get past this wall because I have conceived of the Wall as something keeping me IN. But now I stop to consider all the things that this Wall is in fact keeping OUT.
Come to think of it, why should I want to get past the Wall? It’s an excellent defense system! Against all kinds of nasty things. Ridicule, insult, terror, pain, and who knows what else. Why should I be in such a hurry to get to all that stuff anyway?
Fuck it.
I turn away from the Wall, and head back down the slope towards the town. It’s a good and self-sustaining and safe little town where people know their place and nothing much changes. Who am I to change things anyway?
That Wall is bigger than you. It has always been Wall and shall always be Wall. Who are you to challenge it? Who do you think you are? What gall! What arrogance!
Back in the town we play games. There’s good food. There’s girls there too, if you like. I’m a man of some respect in this town. Soon I’ll forget about the Wall. It happens to everyone.
